October 22nd, 2016 by Anthea | 0

//

The Ministry of Education for over a year now has been ensuring that the ARTS is being aggressively incorporated into their national school curriculum (NSC) and plans. The concept of STEM is being improved to include the Arts as a driver to learning all subjects generally, hence STEAM.

Last week, on October 13, 14 and this week on October 20, 21, almost 150 primary school teachers have been undergoing training on adapting to the NSC. The training sessions were hosted at Saint George’s College, by senior education officers employed to and representing the Ministry of Education. Of course, on a normal day to day basis, these individuals are responsible for creating and improving the curriculum.
Yesterday, October 21st, 2016 was the final day.

Now there is no turning back as the world has been paused to take note of the accomplishments of both Jamaica and Obama and are only wondering HOW, WHEN, WHY…

The name power-of-attorney can be intimidating at times, but, the individual so appointed never is a replacement for, although carrying out some duties of a trained attorney-at-law. EDITORIAL: ART Careers for Jamaicans everywhere

October 12th, 2009 by Anthea | 0

//

Surprisingly although Jamaica, as a third world country, has surpassed boundaries, and, somehow manages quite well in the first world, many Jamaicans remain clueless on art as a career. Over 200 parents were asked if they would support their children seeking a career in visual art, and needless to say less than a handful were clueless of the field beyond applying paint to canvas to capture a Jamaican scene, and then struggling for months along the sidewalks to sell it. This is unfortunate, especially when so many tools are available to teach and research on just about anything.
On the other hand, some parents question the outcome of their child.
Then you have to wonder how is it that Jamaica is slow at advancing in the human race. After …

Editorial comment: Art to Heart

July 12th, 2009 by Anthea | 5

I take art, all expressions very seriously. Professor Rex Nettleford was one of the critical elements of my education. I had him as a tutor for creative writing.

More importantly, I often times remember a number of things Professor Rex Nettleford would say whenever you need to know the progress of a country, observe how that country treats its artist.
The late professor would say it is the artists who see beyond the natural and interpret and translate for others to be able to relate and they themselves understand.

He called me to his office while I wrote for the Gleaner’s Art Section and firmly told me that I should never stop writing about the Art of Jamaica.
I didnt understand then the fascination of the public with my writings, but over time I will.

Still the Professor encouraged me to …

Back in 1981, I didnt want to buy a Michael Jackson button. I was surprised at the way my schoolmates at Immaculate Conception High School, (all girls), reacted to him, especially considering he lived so far away, and we would never really meet him.

Over time, I myself got more exposed to him, through his expressions. I admired him for his abilities. He was incredible and inexplicable all at once.
