JAMAICA POETRY: What to do

What to do

By Rohan Goldsmith, Jamaican artist

We don’t seem to realise we are in a crisis
Our income will plummet juxtaposed with rocketing prices
Living daily becomes a struggle for survival
Spending the weeks waiting on payday’s arrival
The money’s done before you get it
Goes by so fast you don’t know what hit
Some people have none to await
Their horse already gone out the gate
While the politicians squabble over what to do
The bottom of the economy falling through
The people divided along stupid colour lines
The government says ‘let’s do that’ the opposition undermine
Nuff people panic. Don’t know what to do
Some turn to God, “He will carry us through”
Does that mean to sit and fold your hands?
Or get up in faith and take a stand?
Not for me to say which way to go
You decide – recede or grow
