The National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition opens today at the national gallery of Jamaica. A new collection of award-winning paintings, drawings, sculptures and other works show until August 22.
The exhibition, which represents the combined efforts of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) and the National Gallery, will see more than 150 award-winning works by established and new artists.
Public favourite
The public will also have the opportunity to select favourite medal-winning pieces to help determine the winner of the Viewers’ Vote Prize through text voting provided by competition sponsor CLARO. Other sponsors of this year’s competition include the Tourism Enhancement Fund and the Urban Development Corporation.
Interested persons may view the exhibition during the gallery’s regular opening hours: Tuesdays to Thursdays at 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturdays between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
From September 28 to December 10, the JCDC will also be staging a series of travelling exhibitions across the island featuring the top-awarded pieces from this year’s competition.
The official opening and awards reception will take place at the National Gallery of Jamaica starting at 3 p.m. today. The public is invited.
