The PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run

Title: The PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run
Description: For the past 13 years, the PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run has facilitated healthy lifestyles for a worthy cause. Historically, the run charges Jamaicans and company’s to make a catalytic monetary and social impact on health and child care initiatives in dire need.

$11,181,000 is written boldly on the cheque presented to Dr. Rory Dixon of Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, Mrs. June Coward-Fearon of Jamaica Association for the Deaf and Ms. Virginia Woods of Jamaica Society for the Blind. PanCaribbean’s President & CEO, Donovan Perkins was proud to present the representative cheque following another successful staging of the Sigma Corporate Run. 11,176 registered participants ran, walked and wheeled their way through Corporate Area streets on Sunday, February 21 to make their contribution to the 12 year old charity event. The PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run however sees diverse people, some of whom have never been in a marathon of any kind, let alone walked or jogged at all – well maybe not since physical education class in high school. Alfred “Frano” Francis of Jamdammers Running Club categorizes participants into two groups: Recreational runners and Hardcore runners.

Each year participants reunite with friends they’ve met over the years, while new individuals become part of the one-day corporate family affair

Recreational runners are those “who try to foster a healthy lifestyle” according to Mr. Francis, and are majority of the participants in the The PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run each year. Francis says that Hardcore runners are those who either “Run for money, train for marathons, or part of a national team. They are into wellness.”

For the first-timers or those who are recreational runners, it is important that some preparation is made before attempting the 5.6K (3.5mile) race on Sunday, February 20, 2011. With a few weeks left until the event, Mr. Francis recommends the following:

Start on a walking regime of 2 miles and every other day add 1 mile
Begin a mix of running and walking for a total of 5 minutes. Run for 1min then walk for 4mins; as you continue to build more physical strength increase your run time by 1 minute while reducing your walk time by the same (i.e. run 2mins, walk 3mins; run 3mins, walk 2mins; run 4mins, walk 1min).
Warm up and warm down exercises must be practiced
Keep hydrated
Consume a balanced diet
It is also very important for persons to consult their physicians especially if they have any health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, heart issues, and physical injuries. Though the organizers of the annual road race hope to meet their target for sponsorship each year, Mr. Francis adds but that he hopes the participants see the event as the beginning of “maintaining a physical activity programme as well as a team building exercise.”

Not only will participating in the PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run be of personal benefit to each individual health-wise, they will also be contributing to healthcare in the island. It is hoped that some $15 Million can be raised for Victoria Jubilee Hospital’s Neo Natal Care Unit.

The PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run takes place on Sunday, February 20, with walkers, runners, and persons who use wheelchairs making their way from Pan Caribbean Financial Services Limited on Knutsford Boulevard, around the Corporate Area, to Emancipation Park. Registration for corporate, non-corporate and individuals closes on Friday February 4.
