Now when it comes to children, Anthea McGibbon is a natural caregiver. Did you know she has been teaching for over 20 years? As long as she or any one who really knows her can remember, she is also always surrounded by children, she calls her nieces and nephews.
Before teaching, her teachers made her help other children in class. She recalls Ms Williams from Immaculate High School in particular who always made her help others less adept at Mathematics, her favourite subject. It was Ms Williams’ way of making her learn and apply herself more, but it honed her skills in teaching overall.
Her swim trainer, Teddy Hayles, at ICHS led her to the YMCA because of her fear of the deep end at the school’s pool. At the Y she overcame more than the deep end. After that, he asked her to help others to learn.
In the earlier days, she started out teaching at her first church – The Apostolic Church of Jamaica(ACJ), Bethel Temple and swimming at the YMCA. She taught Bible, and started the ACJ art club.
Afterwards she extended herself to other areas. One was with the dumb and deaf children, who she got involved with after her friend Debbie Campbell and herself went to learn sign language.
Her mother who started nurseries and creaches asked her to “help out”.
She was asked by her aunt Sheila who she calls “Lushus” to teach at schools where she was also a teacher.
Is it any wonder Anthea who has students for private classes in english, maths, art, swimming still founded a Foundation to help youth.
Her OAaSIS International Foundation empowers, exposes, educate others starting with youth. “Art is engendered in education”.
