Jamaicans Do It Yourself: Cool your refrigerator

So you buy a new model fridge and then it stops working. Don’t panic.. According to experts here is your check list:

REFRIGERATOR/ FREEZER is not operating, or food does not freeze sufficiently
Check the plug, the controls (Temperature should not be set to cold then), Move appliance from sunlight, ensure there is clearance all around

REFRIGERATOR NOT COOLING
Check controls

CLICKING SOUNDS ALONG WITH REFRIGERATOR NOT COOLING
Test both replay and capacitor with a multimeter and replace the relay and the capacitor. (These are not expensive). If either or both are working fine, clean your condenser, and if that doesnt work check your compressor

ON AND OFF CLICKING SOUNDS FROM BACK
Compressor overheating so it clicks on and off. Check for DIRTY CONDENSER COILS and do clean the condenser and the fan. Proper maintenance clean your coils every six months

COMPRESSOR ERRORS
Check capacitor if it refuses to start, check relay if it doesnt start
If it fails you suddenly, replace it

REFRIGERATOR FREEZES FOOD
Check to ensure temperature control is not set tooo cold

FOOD TOO JUICY or MOIST
Temperature control is set to o colder

LOUD NOISES from refrigerator itself
Temperature controls should be set properly, Ensure fridge is flat and not too close to the wall

SOUNDS LIKE WATER FLOWING
Dont panic, your fridge is normal. The refrigerant is generating movements inside

SIDE PANEL OF REFRIGERATOR IS HOT
Check to ensure radiation (air ventilator/cooler) pipe is installed

IS DEW ON THE OUTSIDE OF APPLIANCE
High humidity

FOUL ODOUR FROM INSIDE
Check for spoiled food, ensure all containers are properly sealed, wipe away any fluid from vegetable bin, Empty evaporation tray at the back of the unit

FROST DEVELOPS IN FREEZER
Check that the door seal is tight, check that the evaporation slots arent clogged, ensure enough room for circulation

DEW ON VEGETABLE COMPARTMENT
Ensure door seal is tight, and that the door is not left open for long periods, close all containers with liquids

TEMPERATURE TOO LOW
Turn up the knob to colder

DOOR IS NOT CLOSING
Check if food or items are hanging out, check if seal is loosened and replace it with a tighter one

LIGHT DIMS
Has the Breaker tripped – Reset it in the proper way, even if it says on RESET the breaker

DEFROST TIMER malfunctioning – replace it or the computer board
