2026 PEP TIP for Language Arts Performance Task

Here is a guide on how to outline your essay for Language Arts performance task for Grade 5 students.

As you prepare for your PEP exams, practice the format for your essay writing. Your essay should have 5 praragraphs as follows:-
PARAGRAPH ONE: Introduction
PARAGRAPH TWO: Point 1 which would be the first supporting point and first subtopic
PARAGRAPH THREE: Point 2 which would be the second supporting point and second subtopic
PARAGRAPH FOUR: Point 3 which would be the third supporting point and third subtopic
PARAGRAPH FIVE: Conclusion or summary of your points of you have concluded based on information gathering from given sources

Introduction should have a hook. After the hook give a definition of your topic. You may define in one or two sentences the title, a main word or phrase from your title. State clearly and briefly the three supporting points that you will be discussing further. Then you are ready to start discussing your points.

Each point stated in the introduction should be stated as an introduction to your ‘point paragraphs’. Remember these points are subtopics for the paragraphs in the body of the essay. Here’s an acronym you can use to remember how to present your point which supports the overall main topic.
P – Point and purpose (State your supporting point with purpose and as well state the purpose of this point.
E – Evidence (quote exact sentences which form the basis or acts as evidence for you choosing the point you just stated.)
E – Explain (In at least 3 sentences explain what you understand from the evidence)
L – Link (Link your point back to the sources. Here you can again state sentences you read in the sources, make reference to the sources, but you DO NOT have to quote word for word. In other words refer to the source but rewrite in your own words what youve rad in the source with reference to that source.)

Conclusion (Briefly in no more than five sentences state your conclusion. Very succinctly end with the three main points you discussed and point them as reasons for supporting the main topic.

LET’S REPEAT all of the above in a different way below:-

INTRODUCTION
When doing the introduction to your essay, you need to open with a hook sentence or phrase or question. Then you should give clear definition sentences about the overall title. Then state the points that support the main title that you will be discussing in the body paragraphs before your conclusion.

POINT ONE PARAGRAPH
State your first point that supports the overall title in an interesting way that even the Prime Minister Andrew Holness will want to stop what he is doing to read your thoughts. Find the sentences in the sources given and state them. Use quotation marks and ensure you state the source from which you are taking the evidence. Try to quote at least two sentences. Then in at least 3 sentences explain in your own words the quoted sentences you just stated. As you write, link it to the overriding title for your essay. So in other words as you detail your POINT ONE with evidence from the sources ensure you link to the essay’s title. Lastly paraphrase one of the supporting points from the sources. You can use examples given in the sources and of course state which source. However do not put these in quotes.

POINTS TWO AND THREE uses the same format as POINT ONE above

CONCLUSION
For the conclusion State the three supporting points that you chose to support of the essay’s title. Ensure you link them to the main title. Cite examples. Give a recommendation.
