Ivett Jackson is on a mission to change the lives of abuse teenage girls, men and women who are crushed, downtrodden, and are experiencing feelings of hopelessness. Nothing in her book is fiction or embellished. Instead, the story is simply the door into Ivett Jackson’s life’s Journey. Her story is told with brutal honesty,
in her unique voice while growing up in abject poverty in Jamaica and suffering unimaginable mental and physical abuse.
Her stepfather, the one person who should have cared for her, was a monster. And while not the only person to be molested by a family member, today Ivett stands victorious over evil. She overcame her many traumas because she was blessed with a vibrant, resilient spirit, a kind, gentle heart, and an unwavering love of God. Her saga offers hope and empowerment to all.
In 1973, Ivett Jackson migrated to the United States. She attended nursing school and began working at a hospital at which she met a young man. Two years later they were engaged and got married, yet once again Ivett found herself involved in an abusive relationship, which begs the question that has been asked time and time again: Why is it that some people would stay in unpleasant situations rather than embrace change?
Perhaps their inability to see beyond their own situations or environments keep them from seeking a better life? Believing that they are powerless to alter their circumstances, they settle into their daily routines as if all is well. But they continue to walk down a path that leads to more pain. From this identical journey comes a true
story of strength, courage, and determination, and a soul yearning to be set free. However, none of this would be easy.
Ivett felt immune from the domestic violence that so many women had reported, simply because she felt safe being married to the man she loved. She was devastated the first time she was roughed up, choked, and hit in the face. She also learned that her husband had been having affairs with many different women over the course of many years, and one was with a child by him. For a long time she struggled and prayed, hoping God would change his heart and restore him to be the man she felt he could be.
As a believer, wife, and mother, Ivett was expected to handle all of life’s trials and tribulations with a smiling face, strong faith in God, and hope that some day a change would come, freeing her. After 35 years, and overcoming many medical issues, including breast cancer, she decided to start a new life without the man who was now her ball and chain. Yet there was no guarantee that the decision she made would be for the better. She finally got the strength and courage and ask him to leave the house that he’d never contributed the first dime toward. “I have every assurance that it cannot get any worst,” was what she said to herself. Taking him back was not an option.
This story is about how you, too, can make a clear break for yourself, even when the way out is threatening and unpredictable. This story is Ivett’s, but it may be your story too. Dr. Maya Angelou said, “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refused to be reduced by it.”
Ivett’s story follows that credo, and demonstrates that all of us are far more resilient than we often give ourselves credit for.
Deep down in Ivett’s spirit and soul there lurked a mind that was already made up. But it needed motivation, and it came when she listened to the voice inside her that said, “Love shouldn’t hurt.” So even with the immense amount of adversity that has occurred in her life, she is determined to push past it, still strong and full of life.
And while she has lost homes and land, Ivett Jackson still has faith and an unwavering love of God that he will continue to see her through. Now it’s time for her to move on and for you to learn from the
story of this remarkable woman.
