Jamaicans in New York keep abreast with Trelawny development

The developments being carried out in and around Trelawny, especially in Falmouth is garnering the interest of Jamaicans abroad, especially former residents of the area.
Come February 25, a symposium will be held to update interested persons and former residents on the progress of two major developments now underway in Falmouth, Trelawny. The symposium is slated for the Citigroup Building at 390 Greenwich Avenue, New York, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The symposium will highlight the construction of the multi-million dollar cruise ship pier, and efforts to restore the historical town of Falmouth.

Hosted by the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board for the north-east United States, the symposium is being done in collaboration with the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and IDEAS, a development company located in Florida. Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Mrs. Genieve Brown Metzger will offer welcome to those in attendance.

Presenters slated include the Vice President in charge of the Falmouth Project for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Mr. John Tercek, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IDEAS, Mr. Hugh Darley, whose company is responsible for leading the Falmouth restoration efforts.

According to a JIS News release, Diaspora board member for the north-east USA, Mr. Patrick Beckford described the staging of this event as important, “as it gives members of the Diaspora a great opportunity to partner with investors or directly invest in their parish and country.”

He expressed enthusiasm for the idea of getting Jamaicans in the Diaspora involved and hoped that this would be the beginning of a trend where all future investment opportunities are opened up to every Jamaican, no matter where they are residing.

The parish of Trelawny, specifically Falmouth, is being positioned by the government to make its contribution to the tourism industry with the construction of the new US$250 million cruise ship pier, which is being financed by Royal Caribbean Cruise and the Port Authority of Jamaica. When completed, it will be the largest cruise ship pier in the Caribbean.

This pier is expected to welcome just over 7,000 passengers to the historical town of Falmouth on the Royal Caribbean Genesis when completed and will have the capacity to handle two Genesis-size ships simultaneously.

Construction of the new pier, restoration of the town of Falmouth and the multi-million dollar Harmony Cove Resort are among new investments that will take place in Trelawny over the next 10 years.
