Today being December 25th, 2025 many persons around the world naturally fall in place celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. In anticipation many even welcome the figment of imaginations of Santa Claus (Saint Claus) to bear upon them gifts.
This makes complete the christmas package for some – spiritual factor and the physical factor as even christians are now donning that bright red and white elf hat in church as if carrying Santa on his open sleigh.
This is a new era of christmas and christianity. It now appears that christianity is now considered nothing more than a version to world religions to keep people living in harmony, if it is that to get the point of giving across we must dress as Santas elfs.
What however if we really zoomed in on the reason for the season before actually entertaining the season.
Perhaps the most honest celebration across the Caribbean is happening in St Vincent. According to Robert Joyette in a text message The Nine Mornings festival in St. Vincent and the Grenadines likely derived from the Catholic Church’s nine-day Christmas “novena,” where worshippers attended early mass, then transitioned to street walks and sea baths, evolving into a unique, community-driven cultural event after emancipation, blending European tradition with local African influences.
Regardless the christian faith ever since time immemorial accepts that the entry of Jesus Christ in the world was to bring hope. Albeit his actual birth date is debated as not being in December itself.
But for the fact that it took the wise men a great deal of time to find the baby to bring gifts is the start of the celebration of mas for Christ, and hence the influence of giving of gifts across the world.
So now to be on focus, the entry of Jesus Christ signified the entry of hope for eternal life, eternal peace, joy and raw love – the one that avoids pain for others by our thoughts words and deeds. What christians do not dwell on is that the entry of Christ also hones wisdom which is the most critical element humans should possess as priority to all charqcteristics.
Nowadays gift
Nowadays a visit to almost any church on Christmas morning is a surety to get a physical gift – a surprise gift from the congregation.
I have to wonder though with all the gift giving – is the true meaning of Christmas being recognised only for one day. Whats the take away for the other 364 days till next December 24, 2025 beyond appreciation. Especially in a country with deregulated opportunities for war. Perhaps the whole reason for giving should be expounded before the distribution of gifts.
Let us make a wish for a better Jamaica.
Let us at the christmas party whether in or out of church, focus on the baby Jesus we celebrate, the characteristics of the christ child that pulls us to be joyful. Let us give gifts of meaning beyond tradition. As he grew into a man of sacrifice, may we throughout the year realise the true meaning and transform to the beings we were created to be. Let us not wait till Easter to be repentant of our wrong doings but rather shed in memory of the life of christ since his birth.
He knew no sin, and so should we be more loving, kind, supportive, – WISE in all our doing towards a better Jamaica.
