Seretse has always liked the passion and power of Ellan Neil’s voice from the first time they performed together at Village Cafe in Liguanea and performed the now signature arrangement of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” and other songs like “It’s a Wild World” with a killer Jazz Rock band that featured Wayne McGregor on guitar and Akil Karram on Drums.
For the show at Redbones Blues Cafe on Thursday August 12 rehearsals are beginning to warm up and the band is getting bigger. There is Warren Harris on Sax, Two Keyboards featuring Kamla Hamilton and Elton Brown, Jason Welsh on Bass, Obed Davis on Drums. For those who remember those days in the 1990″s it is beginning to look and sound like the large bands that Seretse used to perform with in his series “Seretse & Friends” when he returned from Boston determined to revolutionize live music in Jamaica. The Jams were hard going and legendary.
Tunes like Give me the Night by George Benson, Just the Two of Us by Grover Washington Jr. Original compositions by Seretse like P21 that was originally written at Berklee Jazz College for horns is getting a biting bluesy treatment from Warren on Sax and Ellan is chomping at the bit to let loose her improvisations as the band trades phrases back and forth.
The show is timely for it is just the thing that Seretse needs to lift his spirits after thieves stole three guitars from his car. With a loaner guitar from Wayne Armond, Seretse is putting his best foot forward in this show with typical determination.
“Time to play some rahtid music”, says Seretse and by the looks of it there is a musical storm brewing…Warning: “Hard Jam Ahead”.
