Jamaican paralegals versus attornies-at-law

There sometimes is confusion on the difference between paralegals and attornies. Attornies at law are also different from attornies of fact.
Generally speaking, paralegals mainly are assistants to attornies at law and can never replace an actual attorney at law who legally represents his/her clients.
It is an offense for anyone even a paralegal therefore to misrepresent his status as an attorney-at-law. Paralegals mostly do the work behind the scenes such as research, document preparation, intakes, client processing and sometimes under certain circumstances process serve. In most cases they work upon the instructions or in collaboration with actual attornies. However worldwide paralegals are becoming more independent and freelancing.
Paralegals cannot be promoted to Judges and cannot sign documents unless given a power of attorney instrument to do so. Then they can sign documents of fact, for factual purposes.

The law require that a power of attorney document must only be given to someone knowleable of the facts of the case.
