‘Job application letter’ guide for Jamaicans



The struggle to get a job is real. Most times employers are frustrated with the applications submitted.

Here’s a guide to writing a job application letter. Formatting combined with good content is key.

DO a PROPER LETTERHEARD. Include Name, Address and contact. Some even add a photo of themselves

ADDRESS YOUR LETTER TO THE CORRECT PERSON: Even if you use To Whom It May Concern, ensure it is to the right department and ensure the position of the person is duly noted. Enter the proper name of the company. Is it Limited or Incorporated? Add the correct address and contact.

BODY GREETINGS: Be formal. Address the person by name if you have a name up top. Not sure if it is a male or female, then say Sir/ Madam.

BODY. Introduce your name and state in one line who you are – a graduate. Say your purpose. Leave out “Greetings in the mighty name of Jesus and our soon coming King. Do not put anything about a nice day or added pleasantries.
State your interst in the particular place of potential employment. Elaborate on the reason you chose that place to apply. State the the main reasons you want to work with that place.

State what your chief qualifications and skills are. Discuss what you intend to bring to their table to make yourself an asset to them.

State a few applicable skills and special qualities you possess.
Invite them to see your resume which should be attached to the letter.

Be thankful in advance for their kindest consideration. State where they can reach you as you briefly state that you await their reply or further instruction. Dont forget to mention that you are available for an interview with references when needed.

CLOSING: Close with respect. Dont be friendly but formal. Yours Sincerely, yours respectfully are great to use and add your name with Ms Mr Miss in brackets.

Of course its always good to have your motto embodied in the ender.
