I am in London, I need my iphone returned from the Jamaican ‘thief’

QUESTION: Dear Legal Wiz,
I came to Jamaica in December, with my iphone S45 from London. A man who lives near to my yard told me he would unlock it for me. I gave him the phone, but he never came back. I went to his store and he says to me I gave it to him as a gift. I reported it to the police. How can I get this man to give me my phone back? It cost me five hundred pounds. I’ll be back by Easter.

RESPONSE: Dear Pam,
The next time you visit Jamaica, you need to visit the nearest Resident Magistrate’s court and file a claim against him. You will need to ask the Clerk for an early date in Court. A personal email will be sent to you, as if you may need to get further assistance as you live overseas.
