Calabash is back this year from Friday May 25 to Sunday May 27 and Griot Music is going to be there also.
This year for the first time Novelty Trading company will be selling copies of the Jakoostik Album, Jakoostik Vol. 1 at the annual literary festival allowing the group to return to its original Calabash audience in the historic 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence.
Storytime…
Jakoostik was born out of the Calabash Acoustic Ensemble which originally was Wayne Armond, Steve Golding, Billy Mystic and Seretse Small. The organisers of the festival had approached Seretse to be a part of the first acoustic Sunday afternoons but he could not because of travel commitments to Sean Paul. A few years later when he was no longer touring with the Dancehall artist he took his place on the tribute to Bunny Wailer’s “Blackheart Man”.
The mix of the four guitarists/musicians emoting in their unique way produced an energy onstage and during rehearsals and a few conversations the name “Calabash Acoustic Ensemble” was born and an acoustic love affair became intensified.
Each year the experince of the acoustic music was so rich that a decision was made to make a recording of the group in the form of an album with classic Jamaican son
gs recorded with acoustic guitars and voices.
In order to avoid confusion with the Calabash brand a new name was bestowed on the group, “Jakoostik”. The name references the fact that the group is dedicated to performing and interpreting classic Jamaican songs, acoustically. JA & Acoustic…”Jakoostik”
Steve Golding was not available for the recording because of touring commitments to Israel Vibrations and so Donald Waugh who had recently become a member of the Chalice band was roped in to record Jakoostik’s first album.
Story done for now…
We look forward to seeing you at Calabash and if you haven’t as yet remember to get your copy of “Jakoostik Vol 1” and remember to ask Seretse & Wayne to sign it for you.
Though Jakoostik will not be performing, the Calabash Acoustic Ensemble will be performing on Sunday from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm to close the festival. It will be an acoustic celebration of the five decades of Jamaican music. We will be moving in Decades from the 60’s to the 70’s to the 80’s …right down to present day. The performance will feature Wayne Armond, Steve Golding, Seretse Small and Ibo Cooper. Special guest performers will be Irwin “Carrot” Jarret (Third World), Ozzie D and Sharon Tulloch
