Jamaican lawyer took my money…

DEAR LEGAL WIZ,
I live in Florida. While I am here I paid over US$2,000 to an attorney-at-law to sort out some problems with my family property in Saint Mary. My mom is the only heir and my brother is assisting her for me.
So after my mom’s dad died, I got this lawyer, and my brother followed up with him to ensure the tenants got a notice. The thing is the lawyer said he gave the notice to the police to ‘serve’ and that lawyer cannot be found now. I wonder if he was one of the lawyers who got themselves in trouble.
Now the police are saying they dont remember being given any notice to give to anybody.
The tenants are threatening my mother and brother in Jamaica.
Before my mom’s dad died, they borrowed the title to do some business and they pay some of the taxes.
I still need it sorted out, even more now that they are aggressive. I have a copy of the lease they signed.

Dear Marcia Hayle,
Thanks for writing in. As with the other readers, we have distorted your name for multiple reasons.
Anyway, it may seem harsh, but you are going to need to rely on a Jamaican attorney-at-law to help you in resolving your issues.
You may on your own start the process for recovery and rent owed.. but you may face technical challenges.
You say these persons have the title in their possession, and you say they paid some of the taxes for example, which can affect your case.
The first step is to have a clear idea of the status of your affairs, so that an attorney-at-law can assist with more clarity. Happy to help. Please write again.
