“Son of a Champion” is the title of O’Neil Lawrence’s solo exhibition which will open at The Mutual Gallery on 26 June at 7pm. O’Neil Lawrence who earned for himself the prestigious Jury Prize in 2011 in the Super Plus Under 40 Artist of the Year Competition has been feverishly working on this new body of work. Guest speaker will be Dr. Veerle Poupeye, Executive Director of the National Gallery of Jamaica.
The exhibition is comprised of the winning photographs that landed him his prize in 2011 and a body of fifteen new works. The series of Self-Portraits he produced last year investigating his own personal struggles to achieve self actualization were primarily autobiographical. This year’s solo exhibition continues to look at autobiographical issues where O’Neil Larwence pays tribute to the complex relationship he has shared with his father and the ways in which this has defined him.
Educated at the University of the West Indies and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts where he received a Diploma in Visual Communication O’Neil Lawrence divides his time between his studio and working as Assistant Curator at the National Gallery of Jamaica.
The exhibition is staged in conjunction with Super Plus Food Stores, National Commercial Bank, Carreras Group, Ideal Portfolio Services, RBC Royal bank, Island Mist Spring Water, JN General Insurance Co., BCIC, and KOOL 97FM within the context of KOTE (Kingston on the Edge).
The public is invited to the official opening of “Son of a Champion” on Tuesday 26 June 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Cocktails will be served between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. The exhibition continues until 20 July 2012.
