UK resident replies to ‘Crime on Jamaican returnees’ letter

Hi Joel

I have just read your articel on ‘crime on returnees to Jamaica’ which was published in 2010.

I am not sure if since this you have done any further research or investigation into this issue but as the daughter of a retired woman who is living in Jamaica I am extremely concerned for her safety.

My mother has moved back to Jamaica after suffering a bleed on the brain that very much nearly killed her. As a result of the brain trauma she now has brain damage that has revealed itself in ‘character change’.

She has recently been targeted by a man by the name of Andre Martinez from Montego Bay who has previously been in trouble with the police for attempted murder on a taxi driver.

This man has befriended her and through deception has already taken large sums of money which I am sure amount to over £30,000 sterling.

Prior to the brain trauma my mother would have been able to see through the first scam and not be in a position now where she is borrowing money to give to this man.

Family members in Jamaica are scared to contact the police as they say that the police force in Jamaica do not operate the same as they do in the UK and are also fearful of repurcussions in the event of this mans arrest.

I am not sure what to do, who to turn to or how to deal with this situation as my mother is now hiding the fact this man is taking her money and due to character change has now lost most of her equity.

Can you please give me your thoughts, advise or any contact that you feel I can explore to get this serious situation resolved.
