ON A MATTER OF JAMAICAN LAW and CULTURE, I found this interview of interest, as years ago in a trial case ruled by the then Judge Marlene Malahoo Forte, she simply did not take me seriously and gave judgement to the opposition whose testimony was riddled with lies. I truley find it interesting that she herself later claims to not being taken seriously.
Then Judge Marlene Malahoo Forte is now Senator of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and was interviewed as such by iKNOW Politics. Please see original interview here.
I read her notes of that trial and was surprised that (1) her own notes of how the opposition – an old man with soft voice- was very inconsistent and illogical in his testimony YET he WAS BELIEVED.
I’ve learnt one thing from speaking to some fellow Jamaicans about this. THAT at any level, some people see slim ‘cute in their eyes’ petite women the way they see blondes — with too high a sex appeal to have any or no sense i.e. intellectual ability or to be taken seriously regardless of the topic and forum.
So newly appointed Senator, it’s up to us to make what we do count.
I love your interview and despite the past mishap, I am encouraging you on your journey on behalf of us Jamaican women. In my opinion and now experienced opinion I believe at that trial, you too were a victim of being influenced by society in your judgement, but now as I try to make all my actions and voice count.. so I hope you do too. That the world at large will take note behind our appearance and mannerism where we do not act as expected by society— especially if we seem to happy, too calm, too animated. At times we are also seen as ‘imposers’ in fields we didnt originally study by the long serving members of that field!’
Well here is the interview posted originally January 25, 2011 in iKNOW Politics, being posted on this site August 1 regardless — all the best Senator!! I find that there are so many parallel experiences between you the Senator and myself. STILL May Justice and good sense prevail!!!
