Who still buys art at high prices and what do they buy?

Let’s take a look back at May, when one of , perhaps the largest art auction was held at Sotherby’s.
Jamaican artists need to understand that despite recession leading to a bumpy stock market, people still want to put their money in art. Abstract Expressionism is as much in demand as Contemporary Art topping sought after styles in recent art sales at Sotheby’s auction house. Only 3 of the 53 works offered for sale at that location recently, failed to sell. The auction totaled $190 million, above the $168 million high estimate.

    Anthea,
Food for thought. There is so much art here! GREAT art but the powers that be prefere to focus on sand sea and fun while the artist doesn’t all to create what he/she sees and feels.I KNOW ART is an investment in addition to being decorative and conversational. Will speak with you soon. FINALLY we are certified by TPDCO. Art is my life and WILL NEVER depart. Keep up the great work as you continue to educate all of us. Hopefully my country will inverst in the arts but you know not till one of us makes it famous then they will jump on it. Look at Bob and now Usain.Just watch soon it Is RAS! Much respect!

  2. Thanks for your comments. I hope more artists/es realise that their own pathways and advancements are THEIR OWN responsiblities, not any government. Please see this article on an interview with Wayne Chen:

Secondly, I hope you can host or attend a much discussed artists’ forum!
