From as early as the fifteenth century, millions of Africans were brought to the Caribbean and Latin American region from West Africa. Those brought to Jamaica were mainly from the Ashanti, Coromantee, Mandigo and Yoruba tribes. The influence of these people on the culture of Jamaicans is still tremendous today.
The influence of the African ancestors is also still strongly shown in Jamaica’s matriarchial society, music, dance, oral traditions, superstitious beliefs and cuisine.
The survival of many of Jamaicans traditions is testimony of the strength and resilience of the African people who manages to preserve their vibrant culture, even amidst adversities.
