Artistes unite in Emancipation Park today in AIDS fight

Barbados soca sensations Biggie Irie and Rupee, along with local powerful talents such as Tanya Stephens, Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica, Junior Kelly, Ashe and Total Five, will be among those who will take part in the LIVEUP/CARISMA 11 Man-A-Man Video Competition Awards Ceremony and Free Show. The show is slated to happen today, Sunday, March 25th, 2012 at 6pm.

The event is being put on by LIVE UP Champions, along with the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS (CBMP) and their funders PSI Caribbean. The show is being held under the patronage of the Mayor of Kingston, His Worship Lee Clarke, and begins at 6 p.m.

The ceremony and free concert is being held as the climax to the Man-A-Man Video Competition which was held recently in an attempt to engage 18-24-year-old Jamaicans.

The competition asked that persons within the above-mentioned age group showcase their talent by creating an original two-minute video, highlighting their views on ‘Faddahood and manliness inna dis ya century’.

The topic, as its name suggests, focuses on issues of fatherhood and constructs of masculinity. The entrants may have included in their video concerns about postponing fatherhood, gender, sexual and domestic violence, risky behaviour and health and wellness.

The competition was held under the CBMP and PSI Caribbean partnership umbrella called the CARISMA II project.

Highlight HIV impact

That project aims at highlighting the social issues impacting HIV prevention across the Caribbean region.

The competition saw an eclectic range of video submissions, as entrants were given the opportunity for open expression.

The organisers made the possibilities limitless, affording entrants the opportunity to present their videos in any format, including a music video, dramatic short, blog, podcast, editorial commentary, documentary and animation, as long as it met the competition rules for submission. The ‘LIVE UP Man-A-Man Video Competition’ will be showcased on YouTube with the top 10 finalists’ submissions uploaded to Facebook to allow voting for a People’s Choice Award.

The competition boasts a first prize of US$2,500 ($216,749.99).

The judging panel consisted of regional media, HIV and gender representatives. Applicants were asked to submit their videos by March 10 with the winner and runners up announced on March 16. Those winners will receive their prizes at the star-studded awards ceremony tomorrow.

Patrons will view the top-three videos. Those videos will also be shared with CBMP’s 110 member stations in 24 Caribbean countries
