I too need to evict squatters in Jamaica, but can I?

QUESTION: Dear Legal Wiz,

I learned a lot from your article and love what you do. See REFERENCE ARTICLE I have a
similar question. How can one evict squatters from a property in order
to purchase/rent that property?
Jared Campbell

RESPONSE: Dear Jared Campbell,

Your question is vague, but we hope the following response helps.

In order to be able to evict someone, you have to be able to prove that you are in legal possession or ownership of said property. Once you have proof of that, you can take steps depending on the agreement or lack of agreement with the persons who occupy said property. Once eviction is achieved you can rent or sell.

If you are saying that you wish to have property evacuated before purchase – you need to be aware that the burden of evicting anyone from that property will lbe the burden of the seller and not the purchaser.
