QUESTION: Dear Jamaican Herbalist,
I live in Jamaica in the nature zone, and mosquitoes are killing me. It doesnt seem as if the government thinks we need spraying in these parts, or maybe because its a tourist resort area.
Can you help me identify something I can place in my Jamaica house to rid us of mosquitoes.
Bruce

RESPONSE: Dear Bruce,
There is a species of the Bromeliad plant that is grown in some parts of Jamaica, ideal for trapping the mosquitoes to lay their eggs. This is because the Bromeliad plant has center cups which hold water and organic nutrients.
Then if you have frogs especially tree frogs you are sure to rid your property from mosquitoes. The frogs will frequent these plants and swipe away all eggs laid by the mosquitoes. If you want proof, just visit the Mountambrin in Caledonia of Westmoreland. You can practically live out in the wild, or leave your windows and doors open any time and enjoy the most peaceful sleep you’ve ever had among nature.
