Jamaican play tackles 'being alone' in church

When a potential new convert walks through the church doors, all hell breaks loose. Meet three single Christian women who are waiting for God – or so they say – to provide suitable mates for them to marry.

Generation Heat, the stage play, serves up comical, yet serious issues surrounding the challenges single Christian women face in finding potential partners.

The statement ‘there are no men in the church’ has often been reiterated. So much so that it has now become the reality for many congregations.

Kayon Vaz, who wrote the play, scripted it based on real-life experiences.

“I was inspired to write about this issue because some women are so desperate, that even if a young man walks through the door to find God, he may walk right out again, based on the aggressiveness of us, church sisters,” said Vaz.

Ancile Gloudon, director of the play, said it was good to see young people finding creative avenues like theatre to speak about issues in their lives.

Vaz, founder of KMV Productions, pointed out that the Church must realise that the traditional way to reach our youth is not as effective as it once was, and using the creative arts is the way to enhance the Church’s efforts.

The playwright’s mantra for her ministry is ‘Empower, Express and Evangelise’.

The production will be hosted by the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, in association with End Time Ministries and KMV Productions, on December 15 at the V.H. Percy Centre at 10-12 Osbourne Road.
