It was a soulful to see performances from all different age groups of people at the Jamaica Grand Gala 2011….
So there I was at the Grand Stand on August 6 – Independence Day – after cruising in the van back of my ‘beloved aunt’ from Molynes to the National Stadium. I was there with my friends, neighbours, and family members for the 2011 celebration of Jamaica turning 49 with a Grand Gala.
The stadium gates opened at 1:00 o’clock but all the various activities were supposed to start at 5:00 o’clock. When we arrived people said they told us they were there from as early as 8:00am. WOW!
Eventually I went over to the Bleachers, and what a different experience I had from my previous years in the Grand Stand.
This year’s the Grand Gala, almost the finale of Independence celebrations was great in terms of performances. It was soulful to see performances from all different age groups of people. There were students from different schools combined into one cheerleading team performing for Jamaica’s 49 birthday celebrations. The cheerleaders were awesome throwing each other around in the air sending few spectators in fright. These few were fearful that someone could fall and hurt themselves, but they didnt and demonstrated a lot of skill in their choreography on and off the ground.
In other performances police officers made it fun for the stadium crowd to watch their military performances. The mounted troops played their own version of the game ‘musical chairs’ with horses. They continuously were riding around in circles until the music stopped. Then they would jump off the horse and run under the horse and then jump on again. The last police to jump up again would be knocked out of the game leaving the others to continue until the winner was left alone and mounted.
Finding a winner this way was so entertaining to everyone.
Another wonderful display was by the several white BMW motor vehicles from different series. The cars were used to escort specific gala performers and this made the display even more appealing.
Throught the evening hardly anyone could stop from staring at the centre of the field transformed into one big stage with dancing groups, and musicians doing their thing to reflect on how Jamaica music changed through the years. As well as accompanying dance steps which changed according to the generation. The costumes were spectacular, even though the Jamaican colours green, black and yellow were dominant at times.
Later down in the evening various artistes to deejays came out to entertain. Benie Man, Bounty Killer and the amazing I Octane rocked the crowd musically. Although the gala did not have stunt bikers to do tricks this year, it had a lot of amazing motor bikes parked up in the middle of the stadium for everyone to look in amazement. I guess this was more a matter of safety this year.
As as always refreshments were on sale and of course being Jamaican some persons carried their own food from their yards.p the sky in different colours and shapes. Just awesome.
We decided to leave just after Beenie Man got off the stage. While we were leaving we heard loud bangs, almost as if someone fired a canon beside us on the street. Then the place lit up. There were beautiful fireworks lighting up the skies in a variety of colours.
The grand gala is one event people all over Jamaica will sure to be at each year.
Till my next cruise. Adios!
