Out of many, one music at UWI chapel

Music Unites Jamaica Foundation presents a multicultural chamber music concert in honour of Dr. Don Shirley, internationally acclaimed Jamaican composer and pianist, featuring music from many countries of the world. The concert is to be held at the UWI Chapel, Mona Campus, on Saturday, June 2, at 8 p.m., with welcome drinks at 7 p.m. A wide range of well known classical music performers, such as Vered Saldinger on flute, Rafael Salazar on Clarinet, guitarist Shawn Richards and the Pimento Players, led by composer Peter Ashbourne, have offered their time and talent to celebrate this meaningful occasion. This collaboration of musicians from Cuba, Columbia, Canada, Japan, Israel, Germany and Austria, who have made Jamaica their home, and their top of the line fellow Jamaican musicians, demonstrates the beauty and power of the universal language called ‘music’. It is very noteworthy that some of the performers are also composers of the pieces they perform.

In addition to the tribute to the much overlooked Don Shirley by noted musicologist Herbie Miller, this concert is also the launch of the new cultural friendship society ‘Out of Many One Music’, a first of its kind on this isle. This society aims to raise funds for music scholarships, while at the same time promoting Jamaican composers and their works. Fostering the philanthropic urge to become a music impresario for the growth of Jamaican Art Music and the betterment of the lives of its composers and interpreters is another crucial aim of ‘Out of Many One Music’. In order to inspire the future generation to listen to a variety of different music, all children and students will have free admittance to this extraordinary event.

This concert is being produced by Rosina Christina Moder-Ashbourne, Executive Director of the Music Unites Jamaica Foundation, who also invites the public to the free event “Reggae goes Opera” scheduled for June 6, at 6 p.m. at the Vera Moody Concert Hall, of the Edna Manley College.
