DEAR LEGAL WIZ,
In these Covid times, perhaps you could suggest how we can write our Wills.
Josh
Dear Josh,
Covid is UPON us… literally. Suddenly over 50s are being contacted to name their beneficiaries and next of kin. Go figure the theory that there is some one out to reduce the population by six million.
so either way, are you writing your will.
Here are tips to do one if you are3 doing it for Jamaica.
1. If your assets are straightforward, DO it yourself and save some Covid cash
2. Start by listing out your assets and liabilities – personal and real estate
3. Writing out your wishes
4. Get two good witnesses who just might be around much longer than you think
5. Get an Executor who is not in a contentious situation with none of the beneficiaries, who is firm
6. Name your desired guardian for your children
7. Take care of pets
8. Make provisions for charities to continue
YOU CAN
update your Will from time to time
add a codicil instead which is an instrument which amends, revokes or overrides parts of the original will
register it with the government, bear in mind that newer Wills often override older ones
BEST practice Get an attorney-at-law or Will expert involved. Across Jamaica there is a growing number of persons specialising in making wills like Justice of the Peace.
